The University of Birmingham acknowledges itself as the first ‘red brick’ civic university, whose purpose was to practise a commitment towards teaching in the industrial city of Birmingham during the early-20th century, often with a focus on more technical subjects.
The term ‘red brick’, having often been used in derogatory terms to describe such universities back in their earliest beginnings, did not go on to define the University of Birmingham in the coming years.
After over a century of operation, the university has evolved to include a vast system of learning, as well as a great level of academic prestige, forming a part of the UK Russell Group.
Among its achievements, are the 10 recognised Nobel Prizes the school achieved, which has much to do with their research efforts, ranging from the arts to the sciences.
Furthermore, enrolled students will benefit from the university’s active attempts towards creating a diverse environment between its staff and its students. Not only have they attempted to attain top-class educators and researchers, but they have done so from all parts of the world, hiring staff of many different backgrounds.
Additionally, despite its civic commitment to the community of Birmingham, the university understands the value of making its education efforts international, and to remain inclusive of international students who are unable to study from within Europe.
To that end, the university has also established a university campus in Dubai, as well as an online learning programme, creating even greater opportunities for learning abroad.
Finally, the university boasts being one of the more popular universities in the UK, being consistently rated among the top 30 universities in many UK rankings, and being situated in a city where the student population is rife.
With all of this, the university also offers students a vast range of subjects of study to choose from between undergraduate (ug) and/or postgraduate (pg) courses which range between in-person and online learning.
