Middlesex University borrows its name from its location in Middlesex county, where the former Middle Saxon province of Essex used to stand during the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom rule. Despite not being recognised as a county any longer, the Middlesex University has managed to outlast the fallen county, and remains to stand out as a top institution.

The name of the school is fitting to its makeup and its policies, as the university that stands today evolves out of a collaboration of, or as a middle ground for a number of different schools over the last 140+ years of history. With its origins in schools of Art and Education, the school eventually evolved to become Middlesex polytechnic in 1973, which included an integration of two colleges of Technology, along with the Original Hornsey College of Art.

Almost 20 years after its establishment as a Polytechnic school, Middlesex earned its University status. What followed was a number of advancements in course variety and knowledge quality that allowed the university to climb up its reputational ladder, and continue to expand its teaching efforts, building a campus in Dubai in 2005, another in Mauritius in 2009, and one more in Malta in 2013.

In terms of reputation, despite its long history, because it only earned university status in 1992, the university is still regarded as a young institution, and as such, has ranked among the top 100 universities according to The Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022. The university has also ranked in the top 10 for Research among young universities in the UK for 2022, producing research with a tangible global impact.

Middlesex university also has a deep commitment towards alleviating gender imbalance and promoting inclusivity, both among its staff and its student body. So much so that the university claimed the bronze award from the Athena Swan Charter, which recognises universities for their efforts towards enacting gender equality within all parts of its operations.

Furthermore, the university adopts a unique “learning through doing” approach to its educational efforts, which encourages its students to attain a more experiential education. As such students are offered the opportunity to apply their skills to real-life and work-based problems in preparation for real-world professional participation.

When it comes to student life, since the institution is based in greater London, students will have the benefit of studying in England’s capital, and be immersed by the business, fashion, and entertainment culture, as well as the diverse population that the city has to offer. Furthermore, the international campuses are also situated in popular tourist destinations, and students will thus earn the best of both worlds with access to both quality learning and ample opportunity for social activity.

There are also frequent campus events that take place, which include: live music, live comedy, film screenings, quiz nights, balls, and career fairs, to name a few. Furthermore, if students want interesting opportunities to engage their time outside of their studies, there are a wide selection of clubs and societies to join that tap into religious, cultural, entertainment (anime, mange, dance, art, djing, film, gaming, student media, etc.), educational (debate, marketing, mathematics, stem, etc.), sports, and community (women, postgraduate, disabled, international, mature, LGBTQ+ groups, etc) interests.
