Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Training is needed to become a qualified teacher in maintained schools across the UK, and after completing this course, you will earn a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England and Wales, or the Teaching Qualification (TQ) in Scotland.
Postgraduate Bursaries and Scholarships:
Bursaries and scholarships are available to trainees on tuition fee-based teacher training courses in England that lead to the award of a QTS status which open up opportunities to teach in all schools in England.
To receive a bursary or scholarship for your teaching postgraduate studies, you will need to be in the position of:
- highest relevant academic award
- ITT subject
According to the UK government statement, the teaching trainees are only eligible for a bursary or scholarship if they’re entitled to support under the student finance criteria.
Non-UK trainees have been encouraged to be in the possession of a degree from outside the UK can contact Get into Teaching or contact your chosen training provider for further advice.
For 2022 to 2023, the UK government has an offering of the following postgraduate bursaries:
- £24,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
- £15,000 in design and technology, geography and languages (including ancient languages)
- £10,000 in biology
There are also scholarships of £26,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics, and these scholarships come with a package of additional benefits from the appropriate professional body.
Teaching trainees cannot receive both a scholarship and a bursary. Both funding opportunities are available to applicants with a 1st, 2:1, Master’s or PhD, though in exceptional circumstances they may be awarded to a graduate with a 2:2 and significant relevant experience.
